Grand Rugby Journal

About

Grand Rugby Journal is an independent editorial publication about understanding rugby. It is for readers who follow the game closely, newcomers looking for context and anyone who has wondered why a referee, player or team made a particular choice.

What we cover

We explain the laws and restarts that shape play, the responsibilities of different positions, tactical choices, competition formats and ways to read a match. Each subject has its own place; a law is not a tactic, and a position is not a fixed script.

How we approach the game

We aim to make the moving parts legible without flattening rugby into a list of rules. Our writing names the trade-offs, distinguishes explanation from opinion and avoids treating one team’s approach as a universal answer. We do not offer coaching, medical or other professional advice.

Who it is for

Readers do not need specialist knowledge to start. We explain terms when they matter, use examples to make distinctions clear and leave room for the fact that context changes what a decision means.
